We strongly believe that acquaintance with art should be an essential part of a child’s education. Not only dies it provide knowledge, but it also teaches children how to be more open to the world, to be more curious about it, and more observant in general. Everything that we perceive through colors, lines, shapes, and sounds leaves a deep imprint in our memory and life experience. Moreover, knowledge and understanding of art educates our sense of beauty and harmony, helping us develop imagination and creativity. No doubt, it will help children in their self-expression.
Thus we suggest a unique course that teaches one how to perceive music in a creative way – visual perception of sound. To accomplish such a perception, the course expounds the main elements of two artistic languages – the languages of fine arts and music – drawing a parallel between them.
The course is created for the audience of young children; the material is adapted for their age and supported by numerous visual and musical examples. Each session is built upon children-centered discussions, hands-on art projects (collages), and learning to look and listen to games.
The following topics will be covered:
- The basic ideas of color theory: primary and secondary colors, tints and tones, types of contrast.
- The colors of sounds. The connection between the sound of a musical instrument and a color.
- Contrasts in fine art and music.
- Presentation of movement in fine art and music.
- Composition in painting and form in music.
- Visual shapes (circle, triangle, square, etc.) and musical texture (rhythm, melody, harmony).
- How the various art genres (landscape, still life, portraits) are presented in music.
- Music and 3-D art (sculpture, architecture).
- Parallels between styles in fine art and music.
Class notes will be available for home review.
